Q and A

Q.1 WHAT IS DISCRIMINATION.

YOUNG PATSY 38 YEARS OLD.
Being treated like an outcast and people looking on us as aliens.

SENIER PATSY 64 YEARS OLD.
Being looked down on and being compared with someone else.

ALEXANDER 60 YEARS OLD
Discrimination is some people look down there nose at you they think they are different from you. There are different kinds of discrimination there is racial discrimination where different races argue with one another that is discrimination as well.

Q.2 HAVE THINGS CHANGED SINCE YOUR PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS.

Extremely.

HOW HAS THINGS CHANGED.

In more way’s than one. In the past you could pull your trailer almost anywhere . You could put your kids to school without any worry of taking them out for the summer. You could go round the doors hawking, looking for a living without a hassle. But now you need a licence or you will be harassed. I truly miss all the old ways of the travellers.

THE TRAVELLERS THAT I KNEW AND LOVED.

Yes because nowadays you have to hide it to have a peaceful and harmonious life because over the years you get sick to the back teeth of being treated like an outcast so there for that is why we keep our mouths shut.

Oh yes they have changed it has went to the worst theirs traveling for a start has went down the drain there is no traveller to day they think they are travellers but they are not. All travellers were all travellers . There is no TRAVELING today and a lot of things have changed were all in houses them who are not in houses i don’t class them as travellers there shouldn’t be any TRAVELING i wouldn’t travel today it’s gone well theirs no place to go theirs them small sites but that's not traveling. Say you were to leave your house and go in to a trailer your going into a community site to sit in that site year in and year out 90 percent of travellers i know have been on the same site for 10 and 15 years that's not traveling i would rather sit in my house with the coal fire and sit and watch T,V that's not traveling just what they are doing so you could say traveling is going out the window that's about 90 percent of us gone and the travellers that are left the biggest half of them are not travellers any way not like the old fashioned travellers there is a big difference between years ago and to day as far as traveling people are concerned.

Q.3 DO YOU THINK WE WILL BE ABLE TO KEEP THE SITES OPEN AND HOW DO YOU SUPPOSE WE DO THAT.

Only if we all stick together and let people know that we need somewhere to live,as we wouldn't ask a family that lives in a house to move into a trailer. NO WAY

Yes but we should have more sites open and the sites that are open are only open for 10 or 15 people so there should be more sites with more plots available.

You will be able to keep the sites open i dare say because as i say theirs no where for travellers to go unless they go onto a site there wouldn’t be anywhere to go for the ones that are left but the only way we can do that is to have someone to speak for them like a spokesperson like the gypsy council people that is going to talk to the traveling people but apart from that i cant see sites keeping open for much longer.

Q.4 DO YOU THINK WE WILL STILL BE BORN TO THE WAYS OF THE ROAD IN 10 OR 20 YEARS TIME.

I hope so because our culture will DIE and that would be so sad, what would the younger generation do then.

Unfortunately not as we are no longer recognised. I wish we could be because how would anybody else feel if they had to denounce what they where.

No i think it is all gone see you are asking the ways of the road but i don’t think there is such thing today who’s on the ways of the road. Nobody. You go from here to the north of Scotland you will not see anybody on the roads like you used to years ago but go to the community sites and you will see them but that is not the ways of the road so i think you will have to rephrase that question. Theirs tinkers in the north of Scotland with tents if you call that the ways of the road but as far as traveling people is concerned with the trailers there is not that many of them on the roads today. They are only shifting from A to B one small site to the next. Now weather the sites will be open i don’t think so there is allot of people saying they are travellers but they are not. The biggest half of them are moving in to houses i would say to day compared to years ago i doubt it very much.

Q.5 WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT TRAVELING PEOPLE BEING TREATED MEDICALLY.

In the past i have been treated terrible, as when i was due my eldest son , the nurses in BELLS HILL HOSPITAL asked me to shower and when i told them i all ready shower they looked and said we want you to do it again. I asked why and they wouldn't give me a reason, so i thought and knew it was because my address was BELLS HILL CARAVAN SITE. And I HATED IT.

As long as travellers are registered and staying in the one place i don’t think the doctors mind about treating them. Years ago it was a bit different they hated going to travellers encampment you see travellers weren’t trusted. It was all due to ignorance on the country hantles side.

Well i am talking about my self i have no problems with getting treated and being seen but, i think we all could be treated in a better way, as we know we will always be a traveller all our lives .

Q.6 WOULD YOU CHANGE WHO YOU ARE.

No way because i was brought up this way and i love the way of the travelling life. Also me and my family have fought for a long time, for our people to be noticed for once in our life’s as i think we DESERVE it .

Not in a life time and i have lived one . Why would we change who we are . Would country hantel change who they are. I don’t think so. How would country hantel feel about us trying to make them change, me and my my daughter PATSY HILTON would really like a few people that live in the country hantle way to give us there point of view.

No i wouldn’t change who i am i was born a stewart and a traveller and i will always be a stewart and a traveller it is all right e for us to say we will always be who we are but we would have to think of our grandchildren i think they will change gradually because as i said earlier on that the ways of the traveling people are changing. There will come a time when there will be nobody so i wouldn’t change who i am.

THANK YOU
